ICE to Design World’s Largest LPG Carrier |
| Monday February 1st, 2010 |
Weir LGE Process, a division of Weir Group PLC in Scotland has awarded ICE a contract for basic design of the hull and cargo tanks for a ship designed for carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). To be built by SSK in Japan, with a capacity of 84,500 cubic meters this will be the world’s largest LPG carrier. Cryogenics expert Weir LGE Process will be supplying the cargo handling system.
The contract follows in-depth technical discussions and repeated visits last year by Weir and ICE to the shipowner, the shipyard and potential cargo tank subcontractor facilities in Korea and Japan. Whilst having experience with both LPG and liquefied natural gas (LNG) ship design, this will be ICE’s first design for a Japanese shipyard. The responsibility of ICE includes obtaining ABS Class approval.
