During her visit to ICE’s Romanian office last month, the Norwegian Ambassador took the opportunity to also visit the local office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which is located in ICE’s office building.
Being the Romanian city closest to the border with Ukraine and Moldova, more than 300,000 Ukrainian refugees have passed through Galati, mostly to be settled elsewhere. Following a briefing of the work the UNHCR are doing to assist refugees, the head of the local UNHCR office thanked the Ambassador for Norway’s support and also thanked ICE for being good local landlord. In 2022, Norway was the sixth largest government donor to the UNHCR and the second largest per capita.
