Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) organised an invitation-only seminar in Hamburg in partnership with Lloyd’s Register (LR) to demystify ammonia as a marine fuel.

The Seminar’s keynote speaker was Chris Clucas, a highly respected Isle of Man-based gas shipping expert who, as part of his advisory practice, is currently assisting ICE on a Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC) design project. Chris also moderated an important panel discussion among the world’s leading marine engine manufacturers.

Around 100 senior shipping executives, including ICE’s Chairman, gathered to examine the future of ammonia as a clean fuel option. The seminar featured insights from leading engine manufacturers, technology providers and regulatory bodies.

Discussions highlighted the significant progress in engine design, with ammonia-capable engines now being tested and approaching deployment. The potential for LPG carriers to be converted for ammonia bunkering was also noted as promising.

The consensus was clear: ammonia could become a major fuel in shipping’s decarbonisation journey.
