ICE congratulates Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow) Limited on the official handover of the MV Glen Sannox car and passenger ferry to owner Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL). This is the first LNG dual-fuel ferry to be designed and built in the UK, and the largest ship built at the yard.
Ferguson’s new management team initially engaged ICE in early 2020 to “complete the remaining detail design” of the ship, more than two years after she was prematurely launched by the yard’s previous owner. Due to significant deficiencies discovered in the original design, ICE has since then provided substantial additional technical and other assistance to help Ferguson correct design errors and complete the vessel. In addition to numerous legacy problems, construction of the Glen Sannox has been severely delayed by Covid-imposed restrictions on working hours and by supplier problems.
Ferguson also engaged ICE to make additional improvements to the design of Glen Sannox’ sister ship, the MV Glen Rosa. She is now planned for delivery in the second half of 2025.
The 102-metre dual-fuel ferries are capable of operating on either conventional marine gas oil (MGO) or liquified natural gas (LNG). The ships are each designed to carry up to 852 passengers, 127 cars or 16 heavy goods vehicles (or a combination of both).
