ICE will co-present a paper on Very Large Ammonia Carrier (“VLAC”) Design at the upcoming Gastech 2024 Technical and Commercial Conference in Houston, Texas. Gastech, the world’s leading energy exhibition and conference focusing on natural gas, LNG, hydrogen, climate technologies, and low-carbon solutions, will take place during September 17–20.

Chris Clucas, Principal at Liquefied Gas Consultancy Ltd, is the main author of the paper, which has contributions from ICE authored by Sorin Brazdis, Dragos Totolici and Steinar Draegebo. The paper deals with challenges of using experience from Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) when designing VLACs, arising from the important physical and chemical differences between ammonia and LNG. It points out that in important aspects a VLAC is not just a “re-badged” VLGC.

Mr. Draegebo commented,

Despite having earlier in my career been responsible for designing and building large gas carriers that have very successfully transported both LPG and Ammonia, working with Chris Clucas in preparation of this paper has opened my eyes for the tremendous importance of his practical experience. Chris is a renowned expert in the marine gas industry; he has years of operational experience, is an author of the IGC code that regulates the industry and has deep involvement with SIGGTO and other important industry bodies. It is an honor for me to co-present this paper together with Chris at this prestigious conference.”

ICE has for years been involved in design of several types and sizes of vessels to transport, liquefy and re-gasify several types of gas. Most recently, ICE has participated in an international project to develop the conceptual design of a large vessel for producing “green” ammonia from wind power.
